Welcome to the South Island Literacy website, a place where you can find information about local literacy programs, resources & support.
October is Health Literacy Month!
Health Literacy Month is a time for organizations and individuals to promote the importance of understandable health information. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines health literacy as “the degree to which an individual has the capacity to obtain, communicate, process, and understand basic health information and services to make appropriate health decisions.” (ABC Life Literacy)
In order to improve our Health literacy, it takes a community, working together to improve health understanding. There are many great resources out there to help individuals and organizations support Health Literacy development.
- ABC Life Literacy has created ABC Health Matters – resources to help Canadians increase their confidence to make the best health decisions.
- Health Literacy Month offers ways for public libraries to be involved and provide resources to visitors
- Decoda Literacy Solutions emphasizes the importance of using plain language and how it can make health information easier to understand.
